Knowledge About Carnal Knowledge

I think in our society, we all agree that knowledge is power.
So, I was very disturbed after reading a piece in the New York Times written by Professor Jonathan Zimmerman titled ‘The World’s Problem with Sex Ed”. Zimmerman discusses how today’s sex education curriculum is under attack from the Roman Catholic Church, countless Muslim groups, and Conservative groups – all of whom have made teaching it to children in schools extremely challenging.
Underlying all the difficulty is fear. And even though most kids learn about things like sex from their peers rather than from schools –“Sex educators say that young people are sexual actors, no matter their culture, so schools should help them “make choices” about their bodies.”
What scares me is that there is this pull AGAINST learning and forward thinking and an attempt to eradicate progress and send us back to the Dark Ages.
Sexuality is a natural and healthy part of our humanity whether we are male or female, heterosexual or homosexual. We have worked very hard in our society to finally accept women’s sexual natures, acceptance and equality for homosexuals, lesbians, and transgender people. Our children deserve to learn about it all. It is not going to make them run out and have sex at ten years old, I assure you. But it will open their eyes to the world of human sexuality. Our goal is to teach our children about life – not silence them and shut their wondering eyes.
